Spier Hotel Reopens Following Fusion-Led Refurbishment
We’re proud to unveil the stunning transformation of the Spier Hotel in Stellenbosch – a project close to our hearts, and one that reflects the perfect balance between heritage, sustainability, and modern luxury. Nestled among the vineyards of the iconic Spier Wine Farm, the hotel has reopened its doors following a bold yet sensitive refurbishment led by the team.
Honouring History, Embracing the Future
From the beginning, this wasn’t just about aesthetics. It was about elevating the guest experience while remaining true to Spier’s legacy. “Our goal was to honour the wine farm’s natural beauty and history, while creating a luxurious experience for all visitors,” explains Sophie Douglas, Founding Director at Fusion. “We wanted the design to surprise and delight, but also to work practically and efficiently for daily operations. I think we’ve done that!”
The result is a seamless integration of contemporary comfort with a respect for heritage - a place that feels both new and timeless.
Design Rooted in Place
Inspired by the surrounding landscape, the interiors reflect a natural palette of ochres, sun-baked neutrals, and vineyard greens. Every detail was carefully considered - from the bespoke furniture and locally made textiles to the curated artworks and upcycled furnishings from the original hotel.
The refurbishment also strengthens the connection between indoor and outdoor living, maximising vineyard views and creating calming transitions throughout the hotel.
Designed with Purpose
Sustainability played a key role throughout the project. Every decision was guided by Spier’s commitment to regenerative tourism.
“Spier’s ethos is rooted in regenerative practices – in the way we farm and how we engage with our broader community,” says Annebelle Schreuders, Managing Director at Spier. “We wanted the hotel to be a space where beauty and purpose meet. Fusion understood that balance and brought it to life in a modern, design-led way with a strong sense of place.”
